Itch.io
itch.io is the most indie- and prototype-friendly platform. It's open, you make an account, create a game page and publish instantly, with no entry fee and no approval process. It's the ideal place to test ideas and gather feedback.
I haven't shipped a full game here, but the process is very simple, you basically upload the build (or the web game), set the page and the price, and you're done. The barrier to entry is almost zero.
Why it's good for you early on
- Publish your demo here. itch.io is an excellent place to release your game's DEMO and see some traction, how many downloads, what feedback, what interest exists, before the "big" launch on Steam.
- Pay-what-you-want and flexible pricing, you can offer the game for free, with donations, or at a fixed price.
- Flexible cut, you choose what percentage goes to itch.io (you can even set 0% in some cases); the default is small.
- Game jams and community, many jams run on itch.io, so it's also a good source of early visibility.
How to use it
- Account on itch.io (ideally on the company email).
- Create the game page (title, description, images, tags).
- Upload the build (Windows/Mac/Linux) or publish the game as web (HTML5) directly in the browser.
- Set the price / model (free, pay-what-you-want, fixed price) and your payment details.
A good strategy for a beginner: demo on itch.io → gather feedback and wishlists → full launch on Steam. itch.io isn't your main revenue source, but it's an excellent testing ground.
