Domain
The first step is to have your own domain. The domain is your company's address on the internet, and everything else (the site, email on the domain, verifications) hangs off it.
For Romania you can buy a .ro domain. For international projects you can use extensions like .com, .games, .studio, .dev or others that fit your brand.
In the past I used international domains bought through GoDaddy. For projects clearly aimed at Romania, a .ro domain also makes sense.
.ro, international or hybrid
Before you buy the domain, decide whether you want the brand to be Romanian, international or hybrid.
- If the platform or company is clearly aimed at Romania, a
.rodomain can inspire more local trust. - If you want to build a studio or product with global exposure, a
.comor a more brandable domain can be a better fit. - You can also buy both and redirect them to the same site, if you just want to reserve them.
| You want | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Local trust, a Romanian audience | .ro domain |
| An international brand, global exposure | International domain |
What to watch out for
- Yearly renewal. The domain is paid every year. If you forget to renew, you can lose it. Turn on auto-renew if you can.
- Contact details. Use an email you actually check, usually the business email, for registrar notifications.
- The name. Pick something short, easy to type and easy to say out loud. You will type it a thousand times in accounts and forms.
Next step
Once you have the domain, move on to web hosting so the site has somewhere to live. Save the domain in MY OWN COMPANY DETAILS.
